SharePoint SharePoint Everywhere
SharePoint is ubiquitous and shows no signs of diminished growth. Information Governance in SharePoint must manage and control distinct silos of SharePoint repositories that may be outside the typical IT view. As a departmental business solution the criteria and objectives may be totally unaligned with corporate objectives. Issues such as non-compliance, security exposures or threats, and at a basic level mismanagement of information assets can all wreak havoc on an unsuspecting organization.
The ease-of-use of SharePoint presents business benefits as well as pitfalls. Social networking has put information control into the hands of end users, but often putting compliance in jeopardy. For the IT folks, they must manage more data and infrastructure. The organization faces increased risk, lack of transparency and compliance ownership.
Years ago the focus was on email management. Save it, archive it, or delete it? It wasn’t just a matter of storage there was the impact on legal and eDiscovery and data exposures both costly events to avoid. The same is true today. Instead of being reactive organizations must be proactive in SharePoint Information Governance to mitigate risks while leveraging the strengths of SharePoint.
