Microsoft Search – Love it or Leave it?
After wrapping up our third annual SharePoint and Office 365 survey, I was struck by the subtle change in the responses from SharePoint organizations that are starting to think ‘outside of the Microsoft box’ into the vast array of competitive products available. For example, 44% of respondents are looking at third party search solutions. Smart move. In the past, it appears that SharePoint Search was good enough. That’s not good news for Microsoft and casts doubts on adoption of SharePoint 2016 or Office 365 in the near future should the survey be accurate. From a logistic and cost perspective, it is highly unlikely that an organization would tackle a move to the cloud, or migration, during the implementation of a new search engine.
And what about Office Graph? I do not believe there has been much information – like real information about the product. Can you tune it? Of course not, it resides in the cloud and is available to all Office 365 customers. Can you tell it, that it is way off base on the returned responses and to start learning what I really want? How will it adapt to my organizations unique nomenclature? How long does it take to ‘learn’ what I am looking for? 33% of users WILL select the same erroneous document from a search results list on average three times. I hate to admit, but I have too. Does Office Graph then think this is important to me, or does it realize I am just being stupid? And Microsoft has made it a take it or leave it function, if you don’t turn it on, you are also disabled from all the applications that use it. If you aren’t happy with SharePoint search, are you willing to put enterprise search on the line with an unknown product that resides in the cloud, and can’t be tweaked? I wouldn’t.
From the results or our survey many organizations are becoming more savvy about enterprise search, and it’s nice to see the tide turning. Now if they would just look at metadata generation, auto-classification, and taxonomy tools then the world’s ok by me.
