Metadata Matters – Waiting for the Ah-ha Moment
When you speak to business people, they often don’t understand what metadata is and why it is important. Their eyes get glassy and their head starts nodding, and you know, at that second, you have lost them. I sometimes try to think of ways I can explain metadata in such a simple way that they immediately have an ‘ah-ha’ moment. I have yet to figure it out.
Of course it needs to be tied back to the business benefits and if you can explain in business terms why metadata solves their particular pain, then it all becomes clear to them. At least, to some extent. I honestly believe that’s why many organizations really don’t focus on metadata as a key business driver. Is they don’t see the bridge between metadata and business.
I am curious if any of you have an ‘ah-ha’ explanation of metadata that is immediately understood by the business folks? I could use one. Or do you think there isn’t one and just needs to be explained in business terms as it relates to their organizational role?
