SharePoint Metadata: Jumping on the Metadata Band Wagon in SharePoint
In a recent article by Mimi Dionne, posted in CMS Wire, she tackled the topic of ‘Metadata Solves Your SharePoint Content Management Problems’. Of course this topic is near and dear to my heart. In the article, Ms. Dionne writes, “I’ve attended several SharePoint Saturdays in the past few years. Whenever a speaker polls the audience on whether or not the attendees’ organizations leverage metadata, I’m the only one who raises their hand (I’m usually the only records person in the room — I don’t think that is a coincidence).”
She continued, “metadata management requires long-term vision. The challenge is: will all of the decision makers listen and support this phase of the project? Or will executives sacrifice long-term return on investment for short-term accomplishment? They should clearly express their support of it throughout the organization.”
I am on her band wagon. I am often surprised that many organizations don’t connect the dots of metadata management to fundamental business processes. Why? Think of improving search, records management, cyber security, migration, collaboration, and ultimately information governance. And those are the business processes not the business benefits.
What do you think about metadata management? Is this part of your information governance strategy? Why not?
