Finding the ROI for managing unstructured content. Where does the rubber meet the road?
Being in the business we need to justify the benefits of managing unstructured content. There is a plethora of studies and analysts research supporting the quantifiable benefits ranging from improving search to cyber security. With unstructured and semi-structured content there are also quite a few ‘soft’ benefits which are typically viewed as nice to haves but not usually considered in the financial justification when it goes for sign-off.
I happened to run across a blog posting by Barclay T. Blair who put together a great graphic entitled ‘What Does Unstructured Information Really Cost Organizations?’ which is depicted below. It’s a great summary that covers a range of business pain points all in one place.
I hope for those of you looking for a framework for justifying the costs associated with mis-managed unstructured content you’ll find this useful, and from my point of view it is mostly all inclusive. I would have also added information security as it applies to potential data exposures from within unstructured content. All in all though, many thanks to Mr. Blair.
