All local authorities should now be familiar with the e-Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF) - a set of standards for information sharing for many Government activities including:

• any information made available to the public (e.g. council websites), 
• any information exchanged with another public sector organisation.

e-GMS provides a set of rules for labelling documents (resources) to describe the attributes (or metadata) associated with a document so that when information is exchanged a common vocabulary is used. The Integrated Public Sector Vocabulary (IPSV) defines the standard vocabulary for local authorities to use when publishing documents. The IPSV applies right across the public sector and supersedes and incorporates previous standards such as the GCL.
